Now a days famous for it’s consistent surf, it’s vast array of golden beaches and it’s thriving nightlife scene, Newquay was once a very busy fishing port.
At the top of the port you’ll spot Huers Hut. Newquay once thrived from pilchard fishing, and Huers Hut would be used to spot shoals of pilchard and signal the fisherman at sea. Huers Hut recently made headlines when there were protests to fund the repair of the hut. The £10,000 project was successfully crowd-funded by more than 50 backers.
Boats still head out to seas on a daily basis in the summer and speedboat trips can be had, allowing you to witness Newquay’s towering cliffs, golden beaches and secret coves. If you’re a keen fisher, half and full day fishing trips are also available from just £25 per person.
Newquay Harbour is also the training ground of Newquay Rowing Club and the Cornwall Ladies and Gents County Final Pilot Gig Championships which take place over the weekend of 13th September 2014.
The same weekend sees Newquay host the Newquay Fish Festival – a 3 day festival that celebrates the towns fishing heritage.
